I was in class four when we were given this assignment to write a descriptive essay that best portrays a ghastly motor accident – the deadline date for submitting the assignment was more than 24hrs but, I had already finished mine before the next morning.
The next morning, I was busy inspecting the essays written by my classmates to see how theirs compared to mine. It was all good till I saw the essay written by best friend at the time… I can remember vividly how his use of “…this bus was speeding at 80km/hr” got me. How the heck did he come up with that? His older brother actually helped him out.
Compared to his, my essay was mediocre. I had more than 24hrs before the deadline date so, I went home, copied some of his lines and reconstructed mine to his standards.
When our essays were scored, I and my friend were the joint highest in our class.
I was happy but, deep inside, I knew that my score wasn’t deserved. Looking back at that moment, I’d use one of Steve Jobs favorite quote that says, “A good artist copy, the greatest artists steals (ideas)”. Basically, Steve was indirectly promoting plagiarism but let’s give him the benefit of doubt.
After pulling off that mischief in class four, my view of writing and storytelling changed and with that inspiration I got from my friend’s essay, I wrote a couple more essays deploying more description into my writings and gradually, I was becoming good at it.
I got into high school and my essay writing skills started getting recognition from my classmates and my English teacher at the time… she’s my all-time favorite teacher too. Peace be unto her.
She noticed how good I was at writing both impromptu and non-impromptu essays and she really helped in brushing up my skills. She constantly reminded me that I’m meant for more… a quote that’s actually manifesting.
2019, I joined Facebook – due to peer pressure though because everyone around was joining and I didn’t want to be left out. I admit that I spent my first period in supposed white people’s DMs. Yeah, it was pretty messed up.
2020, I was still cruising on Facebook in absolute mediocrity. I also got into a virtual relationship with this fine woman so, I spent that year channeling my creativity in writing to composing poems and writing love messages for my ‘Juliet’.
2021, I found the right Facebook community that was filled with youngsters who knew their purpose in life on the same platform where I wallowed in mediocrity the previous year. I still didn’t write much that year – seeing the writings of other people gave me an ego check. Am I good enough to thrive in their midst?
2022, I resolved to write every single day and create contents on Facebook – first, I majored in ‘hot takes’. Always had an opinion on everything. Few people still knew me then.
In May, I gave up on writing as I got little to zero recognition. I didn’t write for a more than a week until I came across this motivational post made by a friend which spurred me onto me my feet again and I got back to writing. Who says motivational posts don’t work?
Not long after making my return to writing, I started getting the recognitions I wanted.
I switched from dropping hot takes to Tech storytelling – I was initially surprised that people accepted that version of me because I thought they would find it uninteresting. Well, the reverse was the case.
I broke grounds and gradually imprinted my name into the minds of my audience.
Taking that step from not writing on social media to writing and also my step from hot takes to educative content were a huge leap that paid off for me.
This year, I made this big step to start making my contents exclusive for my very special readers and here it is.
I will be writing to you at least, once in a week or maybe a couple more.
I’ll be writing on:
Technology
My Personal Experiences that might help
Education
Rare Stories
Thankfully, I'm vast in knowledge and over here, I can write and explain anything I want to without worrying about Mark’s algorithm. I haven’t written as much as I want and I want to do it this year on this platform because these stories won’t write themselves.
If you find any of my content worthy of sharing, you can do so. I’d love that.
You guys are my first subscribers and I’m glad to be in your inboxes today.
Fasten your seatbelts, we’re in for a ride.
